The Advocacy Group had a productive meeting on September 3rd, 2024. The main goal of the meeting was to identify what issues individual members were most interested in and willing to pursue. The group identified two areas that they wanted to emphasize:
- Safe Routes to School – Holly Terrill said that she is interested in learning and doing more about getting Safe Routes to Schools programs started. She will be following up with others that wanted to focus on that to identify what we can do to move those programs forward with area schools. If you would like to help with this, please let us know by sending an email to advocacy@bikewalkwichita.org.
- Maintenance and Cleaning of Bike/Ped Facilities – Kathryn Buck and Brenda Mueller are especially interested in getting the City to improve the cleaning and maintenance of the bike lanes and multi-use paths. Probably the best way to do this involves a few steps
- Consistently report maintenance and cleaning needs on the City’s Report
an Issue app, which can be downloaded on your phone, or report them on
the City’s website, here: https://www.wichita.gov/1013/Report-an-Issue
- Keep a record of the reports we have made and whether and when the
issues have been corrected.
- In a few months, bring that record to the City’s Bicycle & Pedestrian
Advisory Board and ask them to request City staff to improve their
cleaning and maintenance.
Our next meeting will be on Tuesday, October 15th, at 6:00 pm.
It would be great if more people would participate in this reporting. So, if you can help, please contact us and we can let you know how to do that. You can contact us at advocacy@bikewalkwichita.org.
If there are other issues that you would like to pursue, please let us know and we would
be happy to talk with you more about ideas.
The next meeting of the Advocacy Group will be on Tuesday, October 15th at
6:00 pm at BWW’s office at 325 N. St. Francis. We’d love to have anyone who is
interested join us!
Bike Walk Wichita was founded as an advocacy organization, and its mission continues to focus on making Wichita a more livable, accessible, and connected city by making biking and walking safe, equitable, and appealing.
The Advocacy workgroup meets regularly to focus on that mission.
