Act Now to support the Better Block project on East Douglas!

City of Wichita – concept design for East Douglas Avenue

At its Nov 5th meeting, the City Council will vote on whether to accept a grant to temporarily install protected bike/scooter lanes on Douglas Avenue along a few blocks downtown. This “Better Block” experiment would help identify what improvements could work to help attract more people to our downtown area, which is needed to create a thriving downtown.

The design concept would include a protected bike/scooter lane, a buffer of car parking, and a reduction of a lane on each side of Douglas (turn lanes provided at intersections), along with transit stops, and additional safety features such as more visible crosswalks. Project designs, details, and background can be accessed online at: www.wichita.gov/eastdouglas

The temporary Better Block experiment will provide residents the opportunity to experience new possibilities and provide input. City staff has prepared an FAQ on the Better Block project that can be accessed here.  For more detailed information about why Bike Walk Wichita supports a redesign, download our document.

Despite the many benefits of the design, some have objected to it.  We believe that the City Council should approve the Better Block project because experience in other cities shows that adding bike and pedestrian facilities is the best way to revitalize downtown areas, the Better Block project is only a temporary test of the concepts, and because the design is not likely to significantly impact motor vehicle traffic downtown.

Do you think residents deserve an opportunity to experience design improvements before decisions are finalized? Let your City Council members know your thoughts to help them make an informed decision on Nov 5th. Here are two ways your voice can be heard:
