Mechanic Adventure Series: Shifting & Derailleurs (04/16)

One Click, one Shift, or that is how it’s supposed to go. In this hands-on adventure in the ReCycle Shop we will learn how to set shifting and derailleurs.

The often troublesome and annoying grind and a jumping derailleur make any ride far less comfortable. In this adventure, we will take the frequently complicated process of setting and tuning derailleurs and shifting and simplify them.

We will start with how shifting works, what the derailleurs are doing and how they move, a little of the history of shifting and how it even came about, and how you can do your own tune-ups at home.

Skills to be featured:

Hands-on and step-by-step walkthrough of indexing your bicycle for smooth and struggle-free shifting

• • How the cabling works and issues that can come up

  • Taking off and installing a different derailleur

  • A take-home handout with material covered in class

    Please call us during our open shop hours, Tue/Thur 2-8 p.m. and Fri/Sat 12-4 p.m. for information regarding the class, sign-up, and payment.
