WAMPO Bicycle and Pedestrian Count
The Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (WAMPO) coordinates an annual count of bicycle and pedestrian activity across 35 different locations throughout the region. The data collected during these counts is used to plan the location of future bicycle and pedestrian investments. Did you know Bike Walk Wichita (BWW) first devised this idea for a city-wide bicycle and pedestrian count and first implemented it? Years ago, in the 2011 – 2013 timeframe, BWW’s Kim N. and Jayne B. were instrumental in creating this effective way to gather this useful advocacy information. BWW implemented and organized this for a few years. Eventually, BWW reached out to WAMPO to create sustainability for this annual event. BWW is thankful to WAMPO!
When signing up, the count volunteers can schedule (on pre-designated days) when they want to count. Then it’s a matter of sometimes bringing a lawn chair, sitting in your car, out by the area, and counting the cyclists and walkers in that area for that 2 hour duration.
