Junior is a rambunctious, high-energy, 5-year-old little boy with an infectious smile.
His father, Wichita resident Chapo Mendoza, heard about the recent McCormick Neighborhood Social that included a Bike Jam for kids, and he knew he had to bring Junior and his little sister to check it out.
“He loves bikes,” Mendoza said. “I recently took him to a kids BMX bike event and discovered this is something he really enjoys. We’ve been looking to get him into a non-contact sport, so this is awesome.”
BWW volunteers wasted no time pairing Junior with a bike and helmet before he raced off to the obstacle course. Once he was on the course, it was ear-to-ear grins from Junior and everyone watching him ride through the Bike Jam. The kid was in his element.
Mendoza shared that his son was recently diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, and because of it he’s been searching for a non-contact sport to keep him safely active. He said he thinks they’ve found it in biking.
As Junior zoomed through the Bike Jam course on a yellow Minions bicycle, daring to jump the bike ramps and rolling over bubble wrap with a satisfying grin, his smile was the proof of it.
BWW sent Junior and his sister home with new bikes and helmets that day, thrilled to have met new friends, and happy to assist with Junior’s newfound interest in biking.
