Sunday, May 1st was perfect for this year’s event! More than 12,000 residents came out to enjoy 21st Street without vehicle traffic…just people traffic!
The City of Wichita, BWW, Empower, Salud + Bienestar, community partners + businesses, NorthEnd residents, and event sponsors came together to provide an afternoon and space for residents to leisurely roll or stroll, encouraging active living and social connections. BWW will continue collaborating with the city and partners to bring you more Open Streets. We will open Douglas Ave back up in September!
BWW volunteers worked from 8am-5pm to provide a Bike Jam safety course, resources, and approximately 20 bikes to kiddos needing one. Justin rode through the crowd on the Rolling Billboard, passing out info + wristbands. BWW’s Communications Team captured drone footage, video and images. THANK YOU to everyone who made the event a success! You are very appreciated.
For the past couple of years, Bike Walk Wichita has been ramping up our efforts in neighborhoods all across the city. The Evergreen neighborhood on the north side of Wichita is a culture-rich, uniquely beautiful, and historic part of our city. It’s been an important part of Bike Walk Wichita’s mission, to reach neighborhoods and city infrastructure that encourage safer streets for biking and walking for all ages and demographics. BWW has teamed up with Salud + Bienestar to provide weekly walks, bike rides, learn to ride classes, and fun events. In addition to programming, BWW is helping amplify resident concerns and ideas throug our advocacy efforts. Recent infrastructure improvements include: traffic calming road diets with bike lanes on North Broadway and 17th Streets. Keep up with Evergreen efforts on our website.
