Volunteer Board of Directors 2025

Bike Walk Wichita’s Board is active, engaged, and critical to our decision making process and the success of our organization! If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at this email link or contact any current Board Member.

Carl Hebert – President

Carl Hebert has been involved with BWW since 2022 and serves as board president. With a deep-rooted love of pedaling bikes, Carl considers himself an old-school BMX’er and loves riding mountain bikes on the fast, flowy trails of NW Arkansas and technical singletrack in the Rockies. These days, his bike riding is often centered around exercise, family neighborhood rides, or gravel adventures with friends. Working at a local bike shop growing up and as director of a summer biking program in the Smokey Mountains, he now has a reputation for fixing the neighborhood kids’ bikes. As a former educator and now a commercial real estate broker, BWW provides the perfect place for him to serve the community and advocate for biking and walking in ICT. Carl married his high school sweetheart, has three children, and has two dogs who love walks.

Kevin Bomhoff – Vice President

Kevin’s love of cycling and community building has found a home at BWW. He brings experience in human services management, non-profit capacity building, strategic planning, and leadership development to the board. Kevin’s formula for a good life is staying active, helping, and laughing. He tells anyone who will listen, “Life looks better from a bike!”

Brian Blackerby – Treasurer

Brian is an avid believer in the simplicity and power of walking & biking and believes the best advocacy is the frequent use of our trails and paths.  You will often find him walking all over downtown en route to a meeting or, even better, supporting one of our many wonderful dining establishments.  One of his favorite rides is along the 2nd Street bike route with a giant grin on his face as he tops the hill at Broadview headed west – it’s the only downhill in town!  Brian is employed as a commercial loan officer with INTRUST Bank and is involved with multiple civic organizations that help make Wichita a wonderful place to call home.

William Sorensen – Secretary

Bill is a retired attorney who volunteered at Bike Walk Wichita to support efforts to improve the greater Wichita area for its residents and visitors.  He is an avid cyclist, having completed eight Biking Across Kansas trips from 2007 to 2014, and he uses the Redbud Trail in east Wichita extensively.  Bill supports Bike Walk Wichita’s mission to improve the biking and walking infrastructure of Wichita and surrounding areas and to continue the charitable work of the ReCycle shop.

Alan Kailer

Alan Kailer is a former attorney and life-long bicycle commuter who has been involved with Bike Walk Wichita for over 10 years. He cares deeply about all aspects of BWW’s mission and has been actively involved in all its activities, especially advocacy, ReCycle, and bike safety education. He currently serves as the Chair of the Wichita Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Board and as Co-chair of the Active Transportation Committee of the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Charlie Applegate

Charlie is a bike path, bike trail kind of rider.  In addition to the great exercise, bike rides provide fresh air, trees, and nature, even if it’s just on the Redbud Trail.  He has always enjoyed biking, but helping others enjoy “biking as transportation” started 15 years ago, working with Risa to provide bikes for young adults in a street outreach/homeless program. This is Charlie’s fourth year on the board, working closely with Bike Walk’s Founder, Barry Carroll, to lead the successful capital campaign to purchase and remodel our building, and to focus on budgets and long-term sustainability to help this small nonprofit, work toward building a better Wichita.

Don Fusco

Don is an ICT native who has seen many parts of the USA and the world. He attended Derby High School, Wichita State University, and Texas Wesleyan Law School. Don was in California for several years as a USAF officer. After gaining engineering experience at Boeing, he started a small consulting company, LucidFEM (Lucid Finite Element Modeling), and worked all around the country as a Structures, Loads, and Dynamics Engineer. Don has always loved boats and bicycles.

Cassidy Cheray

Cassidy is a local business owner and founding partner of VantagePointe Financial Group, bringing a strategic and community-focused perspective to Bike Walk Wichita. An avid cyclist across road, gravel, and mountain disciplines, he races throughout the region and holds a world record in the four-man relay across Kansas. Passionate about exploring new places on two wheels, he maintains a fleet of bikes for different terrains and rides Wichita’s paths and trails daily. As a direct beneficiary of Bike Walk Wichita’s advocacy efforts, he is committed to expanding accessibility and trail development throughout the city, ensuring more residents can experience the benefits of active transportation and recreation.

Courtney Boettcher Smith

Courtney is an active cyclist, runner and outdoor enthusiast. When she is not working as a social worker at the VA, Courtney enjoys competing at local and regional gravel racing and running events. Committed to safer biking and walking community and getting more women on bikes, Courtney is excited to be part of the efforts of BWW. Courtney is a mother of a teenage son and two rescue dogs.

Jocelyn Clonts

Jocelyn grew up in Wichita and is fortunate to still call it home. As a child, some of her favorite childhood memories were of late summer evening bike rides with her family along the Arkansas River bike path, and she now enjoys being able to share the same experience with her children. Jocelyn is a small business consultant with a focus on accounting, and she also serves on the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission, where she is committed to fostering community growth. Jocelyn is passionate about BWW’s mission, as she believes cycling should be safe, inclusive, and accessible to all community members. Outside of work and volunteering, Jocelyn enjoys traveling, hobby growing gourmet mushrooms, gravel biking, and the occasional mountain bike adventure.

Matt Schmitz

Matt has volunteered with Bike Walk Wichita since 2019, serving as a Recycle Bike Shop coordinator since 2021. He is passionate about hands-on learning, whether teaching data analytics during the week or teaching bike repair skills at the Recycle on Saturdays, he enjoys seeing that “eureka moment” with whoever he is working with. Along with basketball and ultimate frisbee, cycling is key to Matt’s well being. He is a proponent that exercise is key to a healthy mind and body and works to ensure everyone has the opportunity to experience these benefits.

Nayu Wilson

Nayu has been working with Bike Walk Wichita since 2016. Serving people from outside of the U.S., Nayu coordinates with Bike Walk Wichita to distribute bicycles as a lifeline to meet their needs. Coming from Japan, Nayu sees riding a bicycle as a part of daily life, not a luxury, as she rode a bicycle every day in Japan. Here in the U.S., Nayu has
been impressed by how people enjoy riding and walking for their well-being. She has a
passion for giving people, especially women who are new to the U.S., an opportunity to
explore Wichita through bike rides and walks. Nayu is excited to join Bike Walk Wichita
to advocate for a safe, healthy, and inclusive community for everyone.
