Bike Culture Booming in Wichita

Residents get out onto a closed down Douglas Street for Open Streets ICT last Sunday. The annual event closes 4 miles of Douglas Street from Delano District through College Hill, and opens the street for people to walk, ride, or pedal along the city’s bustling road. The event attracts thousands of residents, and has become a favorite from the city of Wichita. (Photo: April Lemon)

Bike culture in Wichita is booming!

The collaborative work of residents, local government, and organizations like Bike Walk Wichita over the last decade has forever changed the landscape of our beautiful city, making it a more inclusive and appealing city to live in than ever before. It’s evident throughout the city–particularly the urban core–where residents are spotted everyday on bike lanes, riding along bike paths, and using the city’s Bike Share ICT program.

These investments are paying off.

The 2019 annual bicycle-pedestrian count data, collected by the Wichita Area Metropolitan Planning Organization, revealed an 80% increase in foot and bike traffic throughout the city since 2012. Area bike shops and bike-friendly businesses are reaping the benefits. Wichita recently ranked in the top 10 U.S. Cities for increased biking during COVID by US Streets Blog.

Lucky’s Everyday in Douglas Design District hosted a Slow Roll & Stroll Charity Ride on Aug. 1, with 65 people joining the ride through the heart of downtown. Owner Alex Thomas said he got into riding bikes during the pandemic, and turned his newfound love of bikes into a business, creating his Lucky’s Everyday Lazy Social Cycling Cub brand that sells bike gear and merchandise. “It’s gratifying to see the positive changes to our city and community as the result of the work of so many people over the last decade, “ Kim Neufeld, Executive Director, Bike Walk Wichita, said.

The bike culture trend sweeping through Wichita isn’t unique though. Bikes and cycling are enjoying a renaissance in American culture all across the United States – and abroad!
