More information about the Prairie Sunset Trail extension meeting

Representatives from Prairie Travelers are scheduled to present information about a proposal to develop the City of Wichita railbanked portion of the Prairie Sunset Trail at the February 2nd District Advisory Board IV meeting. The Prairie Sunset Trail is generally located 0.5 miles south of Kellogg between Hoover and 167th Street. This presentation follows previous meetings and presentations about the corridor.

On October 13, 2014, Prairie Travelers presented information about the trail to the Wichita Park Board and requested that the City enter into a memorandum of agreement (MOU) to develop the City railbanked portions of the corridor. The Park Board recommended that staff meet with representatives of Prairie Travelers to discuss the details of a potential MOU. Prairie Travelers representatives and City staff have met multiple times since the Park Board meeting and are in the process of developing a draft MOU. A final draft MOU has not been completed and discussions are ongoing. Early discussions have focused on funding, design standards, maintenance responsibilities, and addressing challenges along the corridor.

City funding for trail construction projects is typically programmed through the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP). The currently adopted CIP does not contain funding identified for the Prairie Sunset Trail. City funding for maintenance and operations costs are typically programmed in the City Budget.
