Bike Walk Wichita is grateful for the accomplishments the ReCycle Shop and our Outreach programs have made this year.  Compared to last year this time, ReCycle has surpassed its previous benchmarks!

Last year Bike Walk Wichita gave away about 600 bikes, and already we have given away 536 bikes this year. ReCycle’s impact is prevalent!

In 2021, 10 bikes were distributed through our partnership with the International Rescue Committee. So far, this year Recycle has already distributed 109 bikes to refugees in need of transportation! This was a great increase in helping local refugees which the Recycle team has prioritized and has been supported by a UnitedHealthcare grant.

The bikes given away are truly life-changing for many of these refugees, who have to get to work when and where city bus service is limited, and since many of the refugees work on the edge of town.  At times, these refugees are walking daily five to ten miles each way–so the bikes can save them time, and make it easier to get to work or school.

ReCycle Outreach programs continue with volunteers providing bike repair services at various locations around the city. This includes our monthly Northeast Recycle Bike Repair at Lynette Woodard Recreation center. Volunteer bike mechanics provide repair services for the homeless shelter weekly at United Methodist Open Door.

BWW’s Bike Jams remain very popular. These events give away kid’s bicycles while helping them learn safe riding skills and confidence. The bike obstacle course includes a variety of ramps and activities for kids and teens.

This year, ReCycle Shop Manager, Kevin Williams, helped create a partnership with USD259’s Homeless Student services. Every year, there are over 300 students that are identified as homeless in Wichita. Another way ReCycle has expanded its outreach this year! The bikes provided have helped further our mission and values to help these students.

Donations are still needed:

Currently, 24″ and 26″ bikes are helpful for middle and high school students who are looking for transportation, to school, those sizes are always helpful. Additionally, any bike parts or cash donations help us get more people riding!
