Update on Monday’s Pedestrian Fatalities

Our Pedestrian Workgroup met yesterday and discussed what actions can be taken in response to the two pedestrians that were struck and killed on Oliver this past Monday (April 23, 2018).

The workgroup determined that the first action should be a formal request to the city’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Board that they review all fatality bike/ped-vehicle related incidents to determine what can be done, such as infrastructure improvements, education, enforcement, patterns, etc.

In addition, there are multiple city/county projects focusing on walkability in process right now! Two current projects include Wichita Places for People and Douglas Design District’s 2020 Vision.

YOU have the ability to help transform our city into a safer, more vibrant and active community. Please let us know how we can help connect and support your efforts!

Your organization is absolutely correct. The Wichita car operators must be more mindful of pedestrian/biker right-of-way in designated paths. I myself was struck last week in such an incident, by the 96 overpass on North Rock Rd., on a friend’s bike I had borrowed. Perhaps the news channels could help in such education of car operators. Thank you for your forum ; and the generous services which you provide.

Lawrence, we hope you are okay! We are looking into Driver Education strategies along with community education and advocacy. Thank you for the kind words and we would love to have you join us for our Monthly Meeting next Thursday, May 17th at 5:30pm. Stay safe, see you around town!
